Bye-Bye, Drive Safe!

Every time we go play in our backyard the same things happen: Emmet runs around and chases the cat for a few minutes then comes and asks, "Dar, dig trut" So we go and get out his car and big truck. Then he pushes and drives around and around and around and around.

Usually at some point he will get in his car, either alone or with his Obit (rabbit), close the door, turn to me, wave and say, "Bye-bye, Mama!" And I wave back and say, "Bye-bye Baby! Drive safe! Have a good trip" and other such motherly well-wishes. And every time this happens I can see my baby as a teenager saying those things for real.

This past weekend Chad and I left Emmet for the first time to spend three fun-filled days in NYC with Susan and Amy. I only had one Mama melt down, which was inconveniently timed during the intermission of Wicked, ha! But Susan said to me, "This is you preparing him to live life on his own. This is the first step, realizing that when you go away, you will come back and he will be okay."

What a beautiful, hard, joyful, bittersweet, thrilling ride this parenting thing is! I am so proud of my little man. I want to celebrate the wonderful person he is, all while trying to subdue the part of me that wants to run to him, pick him up, squeeze him tight and never ever ever put him down.

He gets frustrated because he can only go backward in the car. That's okay with me, though. We have time to figure out forward.
